BWINDI IMPENTRABLE Notional park park at glance size 321kms Alititude 1160m - 2607 m above sea level . Bwindi was gazetted as a NATIONAL park in 1991 and declared as a world heritage site in 1994. Being the best tourist destination for Gorilla trekking in Uganda, it has for years been receiving tourists everyday to experiencing this ultimate memorable bucket list adventure
Bwind's mist covered hillsides are blanketed by one of the Uganda's oldest and most biologically diverse rainforest which dates back over almost 25,000 years and contains almost 400 species of plants. More famously, this forest also protects an estimated 400 mountain GORILLAS roughly half of the world's population including several habituated Gorilla groups that can be tracked.
Bwindi is home to diverse animal and birding species
This biological diverse region also provides shelter to further 120 mamals including several primates such as baboons, red and Columbus monkeys, bush elephants and antelopes . There are around 350 species of birds hosted in this forest making it a birding destination including 23 Albertine Rift endemics.
The neighborhood towns of buhoma and nkuringo both have an array of impressive luxury lodges , bandas and budget campsite, restaurants, and craft stalls. Opportunities abound to discover the bakiga and batwa pygmy community.
GORILLA TREKKING: This has become a tourist ACTIVITY in April 1993 and the park has become a popular destination attracting many tourists to the country to come and trek this mountain GORILLAS which is one of the unique activities that was only done by Uganda way back when Rwanda and Congo had insecurities issue that made Trekking impossible.
MOUNTAIN GORILLAS:. The park is inhabitated by 340 individual mountain GORILLAS known as the Bwindi population which makes up half of the world's mountain gorillas in the wild. 234 of the remaining world's GORILLAS are found in the nearby virunga mountains. A 2006 census of the population of the GORILLAS in the park showed that it's Numbers had increased modestly.
Mountain Gorillas are endangered species with an estimated total population of about 650 individuals.
GORILLA PERMITS: The GORILLA permit that allows you to trek this Giants costs $700 in Uganda and $1500 in RWANDA per person and is always booked 2 to 3 months in advance.
